Australian tourism operators will be pleased to learn that international tourists rose by 4% in 2012 according to Andrew McEvoy, Tourism Australia managing director and the number of Chinese tourists is reportedly on the rise.
While tourism from Asia has been relatively stable, tourism from North America has been tenuous. With the strong Australian dollar, Americans have been less likely to take the trip across the Pacific. McEvoy is hoping The G’Day USA campaign will be a much-needed revitalization. The campaign, run by Tourism Australia, anticipates popular television personality Ellen Degeneres visiting Australia in March.
While DeGeneres will be visiting Sydney and Melbourne, Australian islands may get the nod. Kangaroo Island and Fraser Island are listed under Australia’s Icons along with the Great Barrier Reef and Kakadu.
