Island Arks Symposium VI will be held on Rottnest Island, Western Australia
during 11-15th February 2019.
The Island Arks Symposium is a long standing, high level meeting for islanders, island managers, conservation ecologists and island eco-tourism operators. The Symposium provides an invaluable forum for knowledge sharing, and as a platform for developing collaborations and partnerships amongst island people. Now in its 6th iteration, Island Arks VI promises to be a wonderful opportunity for those involved in, or with an interest in island management.
The Island Arks Symposium organising committee and delegates would like to acknowledge the Whadjuk Noongar people as the traditional owners of the islands off the coast of Fremantle including Rottnest Island or Wadjemup as it is known in the Noongar language. In doing so the Island Arks Symposium organising committee and delegates pay the deepest respects to Whadjuk Elders past, present and future and to the ancient and continuing connection Whadjuk people have with Wadjemup.
Welcome message from the organising committee
The Organising Committee extends a warm invitation to attend Island Arks VI, the sixth symposium on island conservation, tourism and management, to be held on Rottnest Island, Western Australia in the summer of 2019.
Since the first meeting in 2009 held on the Great Barrier Reef, the Island Arks Symposium has grown considerably to now include Oceania. To extend our geographic coverage even further, we encourage our neighbours working to conserve islands in south-east Asia and the Indian Ocean to join us.
Our chosen theme for 2019, Finding the Balance, reflects the many biodiversity, economic and social values of islands, and the work we do to sustainably use and conserve our islands’ resources. Our conference venue is a paragon of this theme. Rottnest Island is an A-Class Nature Reserve, recognised for its unique biodiversity, and is well known for its photogenic quokkas. It is also an island with a rich and significant cultural heritage, and arguably one of our favourite holiday destinations.
We are building an exciting program for Island Arks VI. The symposium will allow island practitioners to explore current and future research directions, and learn about new solutions to conservation and management problems on islands. The opportunity exists to reflect upon and celebrate past accomplishments, renew friendships and extend our networks.
We look forward to meeting you so we can learn from each other as we work to conserve islands as important assets.
Symposium Themes
The overall theme for the Symposium is “Finding the Balance”. We will accept presentation proposals that fall into the following categories
- Integrated island management and restoration
- Island pest and weed management
- Subantarctic islands
- Indian Ocean islands
- Islands as ‘Arks’ for conservation
- Sea Country and islands
- Sustainable island partnerships and ventures
- Value of islands for the marine environment
- An open session to explore new, novel or innovative perspectives
We are very pleased to introduce our Keynote Speakers
