Thanks for your interest for the Maria Island field trip. The trip is for two nights, staying in the historic penitentiary in Darlington. There will be a choice of guided walks and activities both days with presentations on Saturday night and spotlighting on the Sunday night. The trip will be fully catered, though you will need to bring your own alcohol and a few personal items.
We have organised a bus from Hobart, departing Saturday the 8 of February. We currently have it booked to leave at 7:30 am from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (Macquarie St) though if you let me know where you will be staying we may be able to organise a run past if on route. We have booked a ferry (East Coast Cruises) departing Triabunna at 9am if you are planning arriving from outside Hobart. We anticipate to have you back in Hobart by midday on Monday the 10th. Please note that this is a public holiday in Hobart.
The accommodation on the island is pretty rustic and you will have to bring your own sleeping bag and pillow. There will be access to communal showers, with a short stroll to the beach, so a towel and swimwear may be handy. There will be places to charge mobile phones / tablets (Telstra coverage only) and cameras in the communal mess hall. The weather can be highly variable and the evenings can still get quite cool this time of year so you will need to prepare for all four seasons. You will require adequate sun, wind and rain protection, and some sturdy walking boots, insect repellent, water bottle and head torch. Binoculars are also recommended. Can you please ensure that all gear taken is thoroughly cleaned of soil and seeds. All food will be provided but if you have any special requests or requirements please let us know ASAP. Space for this trip is strictly limited to 20 people and bookings must be finalised by the 29th of January through the website.
The total cost is $225 per person, which includes all transport, food and accommodation for the weekend. Please make payment by contacting firstname.lastname@example.org.
